Day 30: What You Think Made Buffy So Great

Day 30: What You Think Made Buffy So Great
I’m sure I’ve mentioned before how I got interested in BVtS, but for the sake of this meme I will repeat it. It was 2001 right after 9/11 and everyone was watching “comfort TV” (Friends). Not me, I found comfort in watching Buffy kick the bad guy’s ass. Joss has said he was tired of seeing that blonde girl walking into an alley and getting killed. So, for me a big part of what makes Buffy so great is that blonde girl going into the alley and kicking butt. Buffy and the other character on the show aren’t perfect, they are flawed but that’s what makes the show so good and so “real”. The show can be many things, it can be smart funny, sad, profound, frivolous and so much more. For goodness sake, the show is call Buffy the Vampire Slayer ! How much more frivolous can you get? Yet the show with the “funny’ name gave us Hush , The Body and a protagonist who broke the stereotypical mold of the cute, little, helpless blonde girl.

I don't "fall in love" with a show easily, in fact, it is rare for me to find a television show that touches me so deeply and means so much to me. I've heard others say the same thing, that they were surprised a TV show took them over so completely. So for me, another important part of what makes Buffy so great are the fans from around the globe, who are still reading, talking, writing about and watching a show that went off the air eleven years ago. Now, that‘s a true sign of greatness.

Well, that's it folks, I'm finished this meme. I hope you enjoyed it, I know I did.

I did enjoy the meme although I didn't comment every time I thought your comments were interesting. I didn't watch Buffy until quite late (around season 6 I think!) but it has certainly opened up the world of the online community to me :D

I thought your comments were interesting. Is that code for stupid? ~_^

I didn't watch Buffy until quite late (around season 6 I think!) Yes, that's when I started too, but while I was watching the first run shows I was also watching the "reruns" on FX, so I caught up quickly.

certainly opened up the world of the online community Yes, one of the things I am very grateful for.

:P

I watched season 6 and then they repeated the whole of seasons 1-6 on the TV every evening before showing season 7 (which was great!). By about half way through I was completely hooked! LOL!

I wish that had happened here. I watched the older episodes so out of order it was sometimes confusing. After about a year in I had seen all the episodes at least twice so it began to fall in place.

I agree. There's something so special about this show - and about the fans. I've made the most amazing friends in this fandom and that alone would be enough to make Buffy my favorite show forevermore. But of course, there's so much more because the show is fantabulous as well.

So true. I found the fans so interesting, I spent 10 years of my life studying them. (wrote lots of articles, one book, and am now working on my last Buffy fandom book.)

It always amazes me how involved in fandom I have become, if you had told me 15 years ago I would be this involved, I wouldn't have believed you. It's not just because as velvetwhip says the show is fantabulous it's because of the friends I've met through fandom.

I only saw Buffy for the first time two years ago but everything you said here beyond the timeframe applies to me, absolutely. Especially your entire last paragraph. I've watched other tv shows - I LOVE Buffy. Love btvs. Huge difference.

I'm always a little thrilled to know that there are people who were fans back when it was on and are still fans now. It's exciting to be part of a fandom with real history and staying power because people love and are touched by the show and the characters that much.

thank you for writing this meme! I've enjoyed reading your answers.

It's exciting to be part of a fandom with real history and staying power because people love and are touched by the show and the characters that much. It is amazing and exciting isn't it? It's especially amazing that fandom is still strong after all these years. Maybe not as strong as it once was but still strong.

thank you for writing this meme! I've enjoyed reading your answers. Thank you for your enthusiasm for the fandom, Seeing the fandom through your "newbie eyes" has been great fun.

So glad you liked reading the meme.

Particularly when I didn't expect it to. I had heard that there were academic studies devoted to the Buffyverse and I honestly laughed. And then I "got" it and oh boy did i ever.

Maybe not as strong as it once was but still strong.

Not as vocal, passionate or numerous but I have to think that the folks who are still in fandom lo these many years are the ones who are seriously devoted to it - the core. And that attracts newbies like me who tell other people in turn and so it goes.

Thank you for your enthusiasm for the fandom, Seeing the fandom through your "newbie eyes" has been great fun.

*blushes* Last October my friend finally watched WTTH and emailed me immediately "I LOVE BUFFY" and explained to me exactly why, and I was ridiculously happy. I didn't expect her to latch onto the character immediately, it gives us something else to share - and I've learned things about her I didn't know before when we talk about the show. And we've been friends for over ten years - and she's half my age. Buffy still matters - a lot.

that the folks who are still in fandom lo these many years are the ones who are seriously devoted to it Yes, and I don't know about others but I am always surprised that I haven't "outgrown" it yet.

I've learned things about her I didn't know The show has a way of doing that, doesn't it? I'm sure there are many on my flist who learned a thing or to about me because of this meme
