Day 23: Two Characters You Wanted To Get Together That Never Did Joyce and Giles. I loved their teenage selves in “Band Candy”. I loved the sexual tension between them. Plus I thought, since they both loved Buffy, it would be great if they fell in love too. I would have loved to see Giles as step dad, that would have been awesome!

Joyce and Giles were cute and funny. Good choice.

Thanks!

That would have been cool... and I think it could have led to some interesting storylines since Buffy would likely have had some complicated feelings.

No, it wasn't. It would have been cool if the writers had explored that ship.

SPEAK TO MY SOUL. It would have accomplished something I wanted - Joyce to be a more active part of the series and less on the fringes - and Buffy's angst would have been off the charts. Her mom hooked up with her Watcher for more than just one night on the police car? I'm stunned they didn't go there. And it would have ramped up Giles' pain over Joyce's death many many times.

In a way they almost did with S5 - Giles feels very much more like a stepfather in that season, although it's kind of a cheat, create an atmosphere of "family" without actually committing to it. (I'd never gotten the sense prior to that season that Giles was that well-intergrated into the Summers family household.)

(I'd never gotten the sense prior to that season that Giles was that well-intergrated into the Summers family household.) Maybe not but as far back as season 3 we know Giles thought of her as a daughter.

Keeping in mind that it's the same episode in which he poisons her. I can't help thinking that if that's Buffy's idea of fatherly love, it's not wonder the poor girl has problems. (Of course with Hank having abandoned her, weird love is better than no love at all, right? *hugs Buffy*)

I think, in the beginning Giles was a "company man" but after S3 and "Helpless" he realized Buffy was more important. He proves this time and time again, with the notable exception of "Lies my Parents told me"
